Work Type: FULL TIME
Responsible and accountable for performing a wide range of patient care tasks. The performance of tasks allows the care team to provide quality care. Meets the qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range on their assigned clinical area.
Performs duties to provide the highest level of patient care and maximize patient satisfaction in accordance with the goals and objectives of the Geisinger Health System.
Functions under the direction of the Registered Nurse. Directly reports to the team coordinators and Operations Director.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
*1. Fulfills designated responsibilities for patients throughout the continuum of care (non-assessment)
*2. Identifies, observes, reports, and documents the social, psychological needs of the patient and family.
*3. Identifies, observes and documents the physical needs of the patient according to standard. Reports changes in patient condition to RN (including vital signs, weights, I/O, Glasgow coma scale).
*4. Demonstrates aseptic technique and safely performs clinical procedures.
a. IV catheter insertion
b. Urinary catheter insertion if competency displayed and documented
c. Application of splints or traction devices (GWV)
e. Transport patients with ordered cardiac monitoring to telemetry beds
f. Transports inpatients to the floor following Emergency Department guidelines.
*5. Performs documentation in the electronic medical records.
*6. Provides patient care that may relate to rehabilitation to carry out multidisciplinary care plan for each patient.
*7. Obtains and maintains the integrity of specimens in accordance with policy and procedure, according to physician order. Uses two patient identifiers with proper labeling.
a. Blood glucose monitoring
d. iStat testing
*8. Performs EKG’s and selected respiratory care to patients following accepted practices, policy and procedure.
*9. May function as part of the team performing tasks in Level II trauma alerts.
*10. Initiates appropriate emergency interventions when change in patient condition warrants.
*11. Provides for, or assists, patient with ADL’s (i.e. bathing, oral hygiene, etc.).
*12. Assists with transporting medications to and from pharmacy and within the unit.
*13. Assists with transporting blood products to and from Blood Bank.
*14. Provides for a safe environment.
*15. Provides 1:1 safety and suicide monitoring.
*16. Complies with all hospital rules and regulations.
*17. Assists in problem solving, trouble shooting and taking corrective measures in care and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
*18. Completes clerical responsibilities as required for task completion.
*19. Actively participates as a team member in working toward the team goals of the unit and organization.
*20. Suggests issues for improvement and offers solutions on the issues.
*21. Meets and follows the division’s and organization’s established Service Standards and adheres to the Code of Conduct.
*22. Participates in required patient safety education programs and other activities designed to improve departmental and organizational safety.
Orients new employees as required.
Performs other duties as required or assigned by emergency or other operational reasons for which the employee is qualified to perform.
Assists nursing staff with hourly rounding.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
High School diploma or equivalent required.
Successful completion of role orientation and competencies required. Attending in-services and educational programs required.
Paramedic Certification ACLS, BCLS, PALS required.
