Work Schedule: Evenings/Days 11am-11:30pm; Every other weekend/holiday rotation

Work Type: FULL TIME (.9 FTE) - 72 Hours Bi-Weekly; 40W Overtime



Responsible for the delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process. Provides care in an atmosphere sensitive to each person's physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs with respect to the beliefs and values of co-workers, patients and their families.

Directly accountable to the Care Director.


  1. Assesses patient immediately upon arrival to triage unit according to established standards. Identifies and classifies patient risk category.

  2. Performs multiple triage duties including measuring and recording vital signs, calling patients with lab and x-ray results, controlling flow of patients and visitors, splinting fractures and controlling bleeding. Initiates diagnostic procedures.

  3. Maintains knowledge of emergency department registration and billing system.

  4. Coordinates patient education and assessment from admission through discharge.

  5. Demonstrates a working knowledge and the safe use all equipment used in the emergency department.

  6. Administers medication, intravenous drips and emergency medications specific to department. Maintains knowledge of medication side effects contraindicates and compatibility.

  7. Performs multiple diagnostic tests and follow up. Assesses patient response at all times. Assists physicians with invasive procedures.

  8. Communicates all pertinent patient related information with physicians and oncoming shift staff members.

  9. Adheres to all Infection Control and Employee Safety Policies. Maintains knowledge of Disaster and Radiation Disaster protocols.

  10. Establishes and maintains interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors and hospital personnel while assuring confidentiality of patient information.

  11. Identifies and communicates ethical concerns to appropriate personnel.

  12. Maintains BCLS, ACLS and BTLS Certification every two years. Participates in JACHO mandated educational programs annually and the Critical Care course. PALS/NALS and CEN Certification encouraged.

  13. Performs quality control (QA/QI). Aids in the development of policies, procedures and standards of care.

  14. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

For Registered Nurses with less than five (5) years work experience as an RN, a BSN degree is required or enrollment in a BSN program within 12 months of hire date with BSN degree completed within 4 years of hire date is required.

For Registered Nurses with more than 5 years of work experience as an RN in an acute/inpatient capacity, a BSN degree is not required.

For current Geisinger Registered Nurses who transfer into this position, BSN degree is preferred.
